BMI stands for Body Mass Index. Basically, it is the ratio of your weight to your height. It was created as a way to accurately determine whether a patient is overweight since the absolute weight is not as accurate. For example, a man who is 6 feet tall who weighs 180 pounds would not be considered overweight whereas a man who weighs 180 pounds but is only 5 feet tall would be considered overweight. Whether a patient is overweight or not is a major determinant of whether that patient is at risk for a variety of health problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease and many other illnesses. This INFOMED also corrects for age. This is because normal BMI numbers are different for children and teenagers.
